Responding to reports that the Home Secretary, Sajid Javid MP, is reviewing the £30,000 income threshold for a post Brexit immigration policy, George Eustice said:
“If these reports are correct then they represent a step in the right direction. The figure of an income threshold of £30,000 was recommended by the Migration Advisory Committee based on a flawed model that made bizarre assumptions.
“However, the very concept of a skills based immigration policy is wrong. We have no shortage of underemployed graduates, what we lack are sufficient numbers of people willing to do hard graft. Any future policy should be based on the needs of individual sectors suffering from a labour shortage, not income levels. We need a fair immigration policy, not one that gives preferential access to the wealthy. The Home Office are in desperate need of good advice and the current Migration Advisory Committee is not fit for purpose and should be replaced.”
