George Eustice, Member of Parliament for Camborne, Redruth, and Hayle recently visited Carn Brea Leisure Centre to meet with the General Manager and Trustees of the Board.
During the visit, George toured the whole centre and athletics facilities, including the newly opened and refurbished gym which has been proving very popular with members.
The centre, which has recently celebrated its 50th anniversary is used by many local schools and clubs for their sports days and other events. This includes Plymouth Argyll football team, which has recently completed a deal to train at the centre.
Following the visit, George commented, “Over the course of the Pandemic, Leisure Centres like Carn Brea have been faced with an immense challenge to adapt and stay profitable, however, as we recover from the various lockdowns it is important that we protect community assets such as this.
“Like many people who grew up in this part of Cornwall, I have lots of fond memories of Carn Brea Leisure Centre which has been an essential asset to the community for over 50 years. I have been running since I was nine, when I first joined Cornwall Athletic Club, often training at Carn Brea. As such, I am committed that the next 50 years will be just as impactful. Carn Brea is home to Cornwall's only eight-lane synthetic athletics track and the largest athletics club in Cornwall, so it is important that we protect it.”
Trustees Colin Rowe and Nick Lake and Robert Rosevear, the new General Manager of Carn Brea Leisure Centre Trust, also added, “We were delighted to catch up with George Eustice MP & his Team and bring them up to speed with the impact of the Covid Pandemic & how the incredible Staff, Management & Loyal Customers have supported the Centre bounce back to near-normal operations. They were able to explain the challenges faced by CBLCT going forward as the operation is not subsided by any entity and had an inherited a backlog of maintenance issues including the upgrade to the Roof & resurfacing of the Athletics Track. It is hoped that any investment would help improve the operation’s Carbon Footprint & help the centre become more sustainable in the future. CBLCT is pleased to recognise the support that George has been given over the past years.”
