George Eustice, Member of Parliament for Camborne, Redruth and Hayle, has welcomed the decision by the Prime Minister, Boris Johnson, to hold the G7 summit in Cornwall in 2021.
The UK is set to host the Group of 7 summit in Cornwall from 11-13 June where the world’s major democracies will discuss how to move on from the Covid-19 crisis. The G7 is made up of the UK, Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, the US and the EU. Australia, India and South Korea have been invited as guest countries. This is one of the highest profile summits in the international calendar, bringing some of the world’s most powerful leaders together.
As the presidency holder, the UK will direct the agenda for the G7 in 2021, choosing to focus on issues that matter and will help the UK and the world build back better from coronavirus.
Following the announcement, George commented, “The Prime Minister has announced that the 2021 G7 summit will held at Carbis Bay this June. A great chance for Cornwall to showcase its leading role in green energy, great food and our beautiful landscape. A warm Cornish welcome awaits world leaders.”
The Prime Minister also added, “As the most prominent grouping of democratic countries, the G7 has long been the catalyst for decisive international action to tackle the greatest challenges we face. From cancelling developing world debt to our universal condemnation of Russia’s annexation of Crimea, the world has looked to the G7 to apply our shared values and diplomatic might to create a more open and prosperous planet.
“Cornwall is the perfect location for such a crucial summit. Two hundred years ago Cornwall’s tin and copper mines were at the heart of the UK’s industrial revolution and this summer Cornwall will again be the nucleus of great global change and advancement. I’m very much looking forward to welcoming world leaders to this great region and country.”
